News

This spring the construction of a second algae production plant has started at the site of ACRRES (Application Centre for Renewable RESources) at Lelystad, Netherlands. ACRRES is the national application centre for sustainable energy and green raw materials. The objective of this initiative of Wageningen UR is to develop sustainable energy on the basis of sun, wind and biomass, in a joint effort with businesses, organisations, authorities and education. This algae project is a cooperation between WUR and sustainable energy provider Eneco.

The goal is to grow algae on the wastestreams of a the anaerobic digestion unit and the Combined Heat Power units at the location. The installation provides us with energy,  excess heat, nutrients and CO2 from the flue gas. Four 200 m3 bioreactors will be built, together with two aerated racewayponds. The principle is basically the same as in Hallum, only these basins will be ten times bigger, This givces us the opportunity to experiments with even bigger volumes. The systems wille be built inside and outside a greenhouse.
