The chart below shows a complete outdoor growing and harvestingsystem. It consists of a racewaypond (bioreactor) with paddle wheel, a coalescer for pre-concentration of the algae, and a centrifuge.
The algae are grown in the racewaypond. The paddle wheel keeps the water moving for optimal illumination. The algae are continuously pumped through the coalescer (photo below). The coalescer has a specific flow pattern that helps the algae settle without using extra energy. The concentrated fluid (2-5% dry weight) is led through the centrifuge for a short time.
The water from the coalescer and centrifuge is led back to the pond by use of gravity. The product is an algaepaste with a dry weight of 20-30%, aquired with minimal use of energy.
